The Enugu State Police Command has charged three women with conspiracy, trafficking of newborn twins, and killing their mother.
This was stated by the command’s spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement on Friday.
According to the statement, the suspects, Ukorie Cynthia (25), Onyia Pauline (56), and Aroh Ijeoma (39) were remanded in the Enugu Maximum Correctional Centre on Friday.
The statement said the trio were first apprehended by operatives of the command attached to the Central Police Station Enugu on July 26, 2022, following complaints that the suspects conspired and sold newborn twins of one Chinenye Odoh, 31.
It noted that the suspects didn’t stop with the selling of the twins, but also murdered their mother by poisoning her food after she realised that the suspects gave her an amount lesser than the amount they sold her babies.
According to the statement, the case has been adjourned to October 5, 2022 for trial.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command on Friday arrested a man, Daniel Chigozie, for allegedly conspiring with two others to sell his three-month-old baby for N400, 000.
City Round learnt that Chigozie, after allegedly conniving with his doctor, Musa Peter, and a nurse, Ezieke Chinenye, sold the baby to another woman identified as Ezeobi Chinenye, without the knowledge of the baby’s mother.
It was further revealed that after fruitless search for the baby, the police were informed after which the suspects were eventually arrested.
The spokesperson for the state command, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a tweet on Thursday, said, “A father connived with his doctor and nurse and sold his three-month-old- baby to a woman for N400, 000 without the knowledge of the mother. After days of searching, the police were informed. All suspects arrested. Baby is safe’’
Contacted, Hundeyin said that the incident occurred on August 20, 2022 at Oke-Odo, Lagos, adding that the suspects were arrested on Thursday, August 25, 2022.
