The Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum, Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, has called on Northern leaders to prioritise the safety and education of children following the recent release of minors detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests.

Speaking on behalf of the forum in a statement on Monday evening, Yar’Adua commended President Bola Tinubu for his swift intervention, which he described as a significant step towards safeguarding the rights and well-being of Nigeria’s youth.

“We wish to respectfully commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his prompt action in ordering the release of minors arrested and detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests. This decision demonstrates the president’s commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of Nigeria’s youth,” he said.

In response to public outcry, Tinubu directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, to expedite the process of releasing the detained minors, a move Yar’Adua lauded as a positive display of compassionate leadership.

Yar’Adua also acknowledged the efforts of Northern leaders who have championed the cause of these minors, noting that their advocacy has been essential in bringing this issue to public attention.

He said, “I would also like to recognise the efforts of leaders in the North who have worked tirelessly to secure the release of these minors. Their dedication and advocacy have been instrumental in bringing this matter to the forefront, and we are grateful for their commitment to the welfare of our young people.”

As Northern leaders celebrate this outcome, Yar’Adua urged them to focus on the broader goal of fostering a safe, supportive environment for children across the region.

He emphasised the importance of addressing the root causes of challenges faced by minors, particularly hunger, lack of access to quality education, and safety concerns.

The senator advocated for collaboration among leaders to create opportunities for youth that will contribute to Nigeria’s development and stability.

He added, “As we move forward, I urge leaders in the North to prioritise the safety and education of our children. It is essential that we create an environment where they can grow and thrive, free from harm and exploitation. Let us work together to ensure that our youth receive the support and resources they need to become active contributors to Nigeria’s growth and development.”
