Kenyan women made a historic breakthrough in the 9 August elections, winning 26 seats in parliament, a further step towards gender parity.
The campaign had already been atypical, with a record number of women candidates, including three who were running for the four presidential candidates.
Twenty two million voters had to choose their new president, as well as two hundred and ninety deputies, fourty seven senators, fourty seven county governors and one thousand four hundred and fifty members of county assemblies.
Of the sixteen thousand one hundred candidates, Kenyans elected twenty six female MPs, up from twenty three in 2017, seven female governors, up from three in 2017, and three female senators.
