Amazon has announced plans to cut about 16,000 jobs worldwide as part of a broader restructuring exercise, deepening workforce reductions earlier signalled by the company.

The tech giant said the latest round of job cuts follows its October announcement, in which it had already indicated plans to reduce its workforce by about 14,000 positions.

In a statement on Wednesday, Amazon’s Senior Vice President, Beth Galetti, said the decision was aimed at streamlining operations and improving efficiency across the company.

According to her, the layoffs are designed to “reduce layers, increase ownership, and remove bureaucracy” within the organisation.

The fresh cuts come amid continued efforts by major global technology firms to rein in costs and adapt to changing economic conditions after years of rapid expansion.

Amazon, one of the world’s largest employers, has been implementing restructuring measures across several divisions in recent months as it seeks to refocus on core priorities and long-term profitability.
