Court Bars Assembly from Advancing Impeachment Proceedings Against Fubara, Deputy
A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo Local Government Area has on Friday granted an interim injunction restraining the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, the Clerk of the House, and two others from sending any correspondence to the state Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, over the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
The court also restrained Justice Amadi from receiving, forwarding, considering, or acting on any request, resolution, articles of impeachment, or other documents from the defendants for the purpose of constituting a panel to investigate alleged misconduct against the governor and his deputy.
Citizen FM learnt the order is set to last for seven days.
Presiding over a motion ex parte in two separate suits filed by Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Odu, Justice F.A. Fiberesima granted leave to the claimants to serve the interim order and the originating processes in Suit No. OYHC/7CS/2026 and Suit No. OYHC/6CS/2026, including all subsequent court processes, on the first to 31st defendants at the gate of the Rivers State Assembly quarters.
The court also directed that the interim order and originating processes be served on the 32nd defendant, the Chief Judge, through any staff of the judiciary at the Chief Judge’s chambers within the High Court premises.
The matter has been adjourned to January 23, 2026, for hearing of the motion.
It was further gathered that despite the court order, the Rivers State House of Assembly on Friday resolved to continue with the impeachment proceedings.
Meanwhile, four lawmakers who had earlier withdrawn from the impeachment process and urged colleagues to do the same, reversed their decision, accusing the governor of being inflexible.
