In a proactive move to address environmental concerns, the Lagos State Government has officially prohibited the usage and distribution of Styrofoam and various single-use plastics throughout the state.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, conveyed this announcement through a statement released today.

The ban aims to address the environmental impact of non-biodegradable Styrofoam and the adverse effects of single-use plastics.

Wahab emphasized that the decision to implement the ban was prompted by the environmental challenges posed by these materials.

Due to the environmental threat posed by single-use plastics, particularly non-biodegradable Styrofoam, the Lagos State government, through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, declares an immediate ban on the use and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the State, Wahab announced.

Previously, the commissioner had encouraged PSP waste operators to adopt digitization for enhanced waste management.

Wahab highlighted that the shift to digitization would not only enhance transparency in waste operations, but also contribute to more efficient management.

He recommended that waste operators incorporate effective data collection and enumeration for both commercial and private facilities under their service.

Furthermore, Wahab underscored the significance of establishing an online portal equipped with GPS receivers in waste trucks, ensuring precise location tracking and signaling a substantial shift toward a more sustainable and technologically advanced waste management system.
